Creatine after 50

I want to travel, carry my own bags, explore new towns, and stay active with my family. Maintaining my strength is a priority, especially as I get older. That’s why I’ve been looking more closely at creatine.
I’ll be honest: it makes me feel bloated, and I don’t love that feeling (but who does!). The research has made me curious about its potential benefits for women over 50. Creatine helps our muscles replenish energy, and when combined with strength training, it can help older adults build lean tissue and improve certain measures of strength. To be clear, supplementation alone isn’t enough, we still have to do the work.

I’m also interested in the potential brain benefits. Early studies suggest creatine may support memory and attention, but the evidence is still developing. It has not been proven to prevent dementia.

A common maintenance dose is 3–5 grams of creatine monohydrate daily. Water retention and digestive discomfort can occur. If you are interested, choose an independently tested product and talk with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you have kidney disease.

I’m still figuring out whether creatine is right for me. However, for women 50+, protecting our strength, mobility, and independence deserves attention. The goal isn’t just to live longer, but to stay strong enough to enjoy it.
