Did You Miss Your Window for Hormone Therapy?

A common question I hear from women is: "I didn't start hormone therapy when I entered menopause. Is it too late now?" For years, many women were told that if they didn't begin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) early, they had missed their chance. Fortunately, the science is more nuanced.

Researchers now recognize what's known as the timing hypothesis: women who begin hormone therapy before age 60 or within about 10 years of menopause often experience the greatest benefits with the lowest risks. However, if you're beyond that window, it doesn't automatically mean hormones are off the table.

The decision becomes more individualized. Factors such as cardiovascular health, breast cancer risk, bone density, metabolic health, family history, and overall health all matter. One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that hormones are either right for everyone or wrong for everyone. Neither is true. The question isn't whether hormone therapy is good or bad. The question is whether it's appropriate for you.

As menopause research continues to evolve, women deserve conversations based on current science, personal health history, and individual goals - not outdated fears or social media sound bites. If you didn't start hormones early, don't assume you've missed your opportunity. Get educated, ask questions, and work with a practitioner who specializes in women's health.

The goal isn't simply to live longer, it's to maintain strength, energy, cognition, and quality of life for as many years as possible.
