The Power of Seasonal Eating — and a Simple Mulberry Sauce to Get You Started
One of the guiding principles behind everything I do—whether it’s founding thinkThin®, building Il Paradiso Wellness Retreats, or leading YPO’s Women’s Wellness Circle—is this: What you put in your body matters.
When we eat foods that are fresh, in season, and close to the earth, we support our energy, mental clarity, digestion, and longevity. It’s not about restriction. It’s about alignment. Alignment with nature, with your body’s rhythms, and with what fuels you to show up as your best self—whether you’re leading a boardroom, running after kids, or managing both.
Right now on the ranch, our mulberries are bursting off the vine (watch my video). They’re not only beautiful—they’re functional. Mulberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. And while most people think of them in desserts or smoothies, they also make an incredible savory-sweet base for a glaze or sauce (see below for a recipe).
Food is information. When we eat clean, seasonal foods that haven’t been overly processed or stripped of their nutrients, we don’t just “feel better”- we function better.
As someone who’s spent 30+ years in the health industry, I believe it’s time we go back to the basics: seasonal, real, nutrient-rich food - and the joy of creating it with our own hands. What’s growing in your backyard OR fresh at your local market - right now? Start there.
Here’s one of my go-to recipes for a quick, nourishing mulberry sauce that doesn’t sacrifice flavor:
Mulberry Balsamic Sauce for Chicken
(Perfect with grilled, roasted, or pan-seared chicken)
1 cup fresh mulberries
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp honey (or swap for maple syrup for a twist)
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
1 small shallot, minced
1 tsp olive oil
1/4 tsp sea salt
Fresh ground black pepper to taste
2–3 tbsp water (to thin as needed)
Sauté the shallot in olive oil until soft, add the mulberries and thyme, and let them begin to break down. Add the balsamic, honey, salt, pepper, and a splash of water. Let it simmer gently until it thickens into a glaze. Spoon over your chicken, and you have a vibrant, nourishing meal in under 40 minutes (including the cooking time for your chicken.
To your vitality,
Lizanne.
