Growing Agave on My Ranch: A Lesson in Sustainability, Vitality, and Stewardship
I’ve been spending more time with the agave on my ranch. They’re only two years young, and still a few years from harvest, yet they’ve already become one of my greatest teachers. When I moved to Ojai, I was one of the first in the area to transition from citrus and old, water-hungry avocado trees to something more sustainable. The avocado trees were over 80 years old, no longer producing, and consuming enormous amounts of water. Beautiful yes - but no longer aligned with the reality of California's water shortage.
Agave, especially the Goli variety, became the perfect solution. It thrives in heat, needs little water, and grows slowly and intentionally. In a world that pushes speed and constant output, agave reminds me of the opposite.
Living in California, you feel the impact of every drop. Water isn’t something we “use”, it’s something we honor. Watching agave flourish with so little has reshaped how I think about designing our lives, our businesses, and even our wellness rituals.
More reasons to love agave - it brings real wellness benefits: prebiotic inulin for gut health, low-glycemic properties for steady energy, immune-supporting phytonutrients, and a natural resilience that mirrors a longevity lifestyle. And, for tequila lovers, it’s one of the cleanest alcohols.
I’m not sure yet if I’ll produce my own tequila or partner with a boutique brand. For now, I’m letting the plants mature and the land guide the decision.
Nature shows us that true vitality starts with sustainability, in how we care for ourselves, our communities, and the planet.
To your vitality,
Lizanne
