Women Need Fat for Longevity
Somewhere along the way, women were taught that the leaner we are, the healthier we are. To be clear, that’s just not true. Bottom line: Women need fat.
Let’s clear up a few things. Body fat isn’t just stored calories, it’s active tissue and plays a role in our hormones, energy and overall health. Therefore, when women get too lean or chronically under-fuelled, research shows that can affect hormones, bone density, reproductive health and recovery.
Here’s another important fact: there is no scientifically established body-fat percentage or six-pack that equals longevity. As you know from my articles, I’m all about being fit, and work hard at it. But as I get older, I care more about building muscle, protecting my bones, keeping my metabolism healthy and staying strong - rather than seeing every muscle in my stomach.
That doesn’t mean excess body fat is healthy, it just means less isn’t always better. A six-pack may look great, but it’s not a longevity marker. Women need muscle, strong bones, and yes, fat.
The goal isn’t to get smaller. The goal is to stay strong, healthy and powerful for the next 30, 40 and 50 years.
