A New Era in Brain Health

Recently, I’ve been looking into an investigational therapy called VES001 for frontotemporal dementia. It’s early (still in clinical trials) but what stands out isn’t just the drug, it’s what it represents.

Frontotemporal dementia is one of the most devastating diagnoses. It often appears earlier in life, affecting personality, behavior, and decision-making - and reshaping entire families. For a long time, options have been limited.

What’s changing is the approach.

We’re no longer just managing symptoms, we’re starting to understand biology. In this case, a protein called progranulin, which helps protect brain cells. Therapies like VES001 are designed to target that pathway, with early data suggesting it may help restore those levels. This is not a cure, but it is real progress.

So why now? AI is accelerating discovery, but it’s bigger than that. It’s the result of years of science, better data, and the ability to identify genes, measure changes earlier, and design targeted therapies. We’ve moved from guessing to understanding. And that changes everything.

Even slowing progression, preserving function a little longer, can alter the course of a life. Because longevity isn’t just about living longer, it’s about protecting how we live.

For the first time in a long time, it feels like we’re starting to get ahead in the fight against dementia.
