Ebola: Why I’m Paying Attention and Why Prevention Matters

Over the last few weeks, Ebola has returned to the headlines as outbreaks continue in parts of Africa. The World Health Organization has declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and the CDC has expanded enhanced screening at major U.S. airports, including Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Hearing the word “Ebola” understandably creates concern. Ebola can be severe, but it spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is symptomatic, not through casual contact.

The good news is that public health agencies have learned a great deal from previous outbreaks. Enhanced screening, traveler monitoring, contact tracing, and rapid response systems are already in place, and health officials continue to state that the risk to the general U.S. public remains low.

Still, awareness matters. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through my wellness journey is that resilience is built long before we need it.

• Prioritize sleep
• Eat nutrient-dense foods
• Exercise regularly
• Manage stress
• Stay hydrated
• Maintain healthy vitamin and mineral levels
• Practice good hygiene

We cannot control every virus or global health event, but we can control how we care for our bodies every day.

Preparedness is wisdom. Are you doing something today that will make your body more resilient tomorrow?
