Muscle Changes Everything

For years, women were taught to think of muscle as aesthetic, optional, and even excessive. What we weren’t taught is that muscle is one of the most powerful longevity organs we have.

Beginning in our 30s, we naturally lose muscle if we don’t actively preserve it. This isn’t just about strength. Muscle plays a central role in blood sugar regulation, bone density, balance, and fall prevention. It’s a major driver of insulin sensitivity and sends signals that help bones stay strong. When muscle declines, bone often follows.

That’s why muscle isn’t about appearance - it’s metabolic insurance. It protects independence, mobility, and quality of life long before anyone is thinking about frailty.

Maintaining muscle doesn’t require long workouts or extreme training. Small, consistent resistance layered into daily life can be enough. I’ll wear a light weighted vest during walks or errands, or use light wrist weights during static tasks like blow-drying my hair. A few minutes here and there adds up.

After 50, working smarter matters more than working harder. Muscle responds to regular, thoughtful stimulus - not punishment. When we support it daily, it quietly supports us back with stronger bones, better balance, steadier energy, and long-term resilience.

To your vitality,
Lizanne
