Ozempic & Blindness

Weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have been everywhere lately. They’ve transformed the conversation around obesity and metabolic health, but with that spotlight comes questions and some serious concerns.

One of the most alarming stories making headlines right now is whether they can cause blindness.

Here’s what the science is actually saying: In June 2025, the European Medicines Agency confirmed that semaglutide, the active ingredient in those drugs can, in very rare cases, trigger an eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition damages the optic nerve and can result in sudden, sometimes permanent, vision loss.

To put it in perspective, the risk is about one in 10,000 patients. A study out of Mass General Brigham also found that people with diabetes on semaglutide (ie: Rybelsus is a semaglutide drug for type-2 diabetes, it is not yet FDA approved for weight-loss) were four times more likely to develop NAION, and those with obesity faced a seven-times higher risk compared to those not on the drug. Reports of sudden blindness and other eye issues have also been recorded in Australia, the US, and Europe.

That said, millions of people take these medications safely, and most will never face this complication. But awareness is key. If you’re on Ozempic or Wegovy, or considering it, pay attention to your vision. Blurriness, partial loss of sight, or any rapid changes should never be ignored; stop the medication and seek immediate medical care. Regular eye exams are especially important if you already live with diabetes or other risk factors for eye disease. I’m just spotlighting a very rare eye condition that has been linked to semaglutide that deserves attention. Your health and your vision are too valuable to leave to chance.

This is a reminder that innovation in medicine is powerful but not perfect. These drugs can be life-changing, but they’re not magic. True wellness also depends on what we eat, how we move, rest, and manage stress. The real power is in making informed choices knowing the potential benefits and risks, so you can approach your health with confidence and clarity.

To your vitality,
Lizanne
