Forget the Inheritance - Pass Down Better Health
As parents, we spend decades trying to give our children every advantage: education, financial security, opportunity, and support through life’s challenges. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized there may be an even greater gift we can give them: a foundation for lifelong health.
We know more today about preventing disease, extending healthspan, and improving quality of life than at any point in history. Yet many young adults are unknowingly heading toward chronic illness far earlier than previous generations. They move less, sleep less, spend more time on screens, live under constant stress, and often rely on highly processed foods. The result? Rising rates of obesity, anxiety, depression, insulin resistance, infertility, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic dysfunction at younger ages than ever before.
As parents over 50, we have something our children don’t yet have: perspective. We’ve watched friends and family struggle with heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, and cancer. We’ve seen how quickly health can change, and how hard it can be to regain once it’s lost. Health isn’t something you start thinking about at 65. It’s something you build at 25.
If I could give my children one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t wait for symptoms. They need to know their numbers, understand their body, and learn how food, sleep, exercise, stress, and relationships impact their health. This will help them avoid or identify issues long before a doctor tells them something is wrong. What they need to do now:
• Build muscle
• Prioritize protein
• Move every day
• Protect your sleep
• Get outside
• Learn to manage stress
These aren’t wellness trends, they’re life skills. And the goal isn’t perfection, it’s awareness. Imagine if more young adults viewed health as one of their greatest assets. It could change the trajectory of an entire generation. One of the most meaningful legacies we can leave our children isn’t financial. It’s the wisdom, habits, and mindset that help them live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives. Because the greatest wealth we may ever pass down is health.
